Finishing tips?

If there is one area where group input would help me..... That would be Finishing Methods, Hints, Secrets..... I did what I thought was a great job finishing a project, my father says what did you use? Try this next time. Using the same product only thinning the first coat brought about a dramatic difference! Sharing info in this area could be a great thing for all of us. Thanks
