“Use A Router For Biscuit Joining” - American Woodworker Feb/Mar 2007 We’ve developed a method for precision biscuit joining... without using a biscuit joining machine! Biscuit joining is one of the strongest, fastest, safest and most accurate ways to join hard and soft woods, plywood, composition board, etc. By using our carbide-tipped 5/32" or 1/8" slot cutter , you can join corners (frame joining & mitre joining), edge to surface (butt joining & T-joining), and edge to edge. Use Item #5155 spiral upcut bit to cut slots in the center of the board which would be beyond the reach of a slot cutter. • Reduces joining time. No need for precise measurements or jig set up • Eliminates bothersome woodworking tasks like nailing, screws, rabbets, dados, dovetails, dowels, mortise and tenon joinery • Makes much stronger joints than doweling • Aligns joints easily • Guarantees perfect joints every time • The router bit’s ball bearing guide controls exact depth of cut for precise biscuit placement Q: Does the router bit make all biscuit joints? A: Yes. MLCS Biscuit Kits can make all the joints a machine can, including edge-to-edge and edge-to-face corners, plus some joints that machines can’t do, such as face frames and narrow rails and stiles. Q: When making a biscuit joint, do I plunge the bit straight in like a biscuit machine does? A: Yes, but you need to stretch the slot just a bit so the biscuit will fit. Mark pencil lines on both boards (see photo). Plunge into the wood as usual, then move the router or the work about 1/2" to lengthen the slot. This does not affect the strength or alignment of the joint since the critical dimension (5/32" or 1/8" thickness) is maintained. Here’s an easy technique for joining long boards: Run several 8"-12" long slots in each board with a slot cutting bit, then place biscuits along the length of the slot. Q: How about joining frames, or rails and stiles? A: The best choice is the #11 round Biscuit Kit. The round biscuit is slightly deeper than a #20 and can join a frame down to about 2" wide. For really small frames and mitres, the H-9 Set is perfect (down to about 1-5/8" wide) BISCUIT GLUE SPREADER SET: Put the glue in biscuits slots cleanly and quickly. Use water based carpenters glue.
